Bisphenol A, abbreviated to BPA, is an organic component with two phenol groups; it is a fundamental component in the synthesis of plastics and plastic additives. It is also one of the main monomers in the production of polycarbonate.
Evidence of bisphenol A toxicity has accumulated over the years, starting in the 1930s and becoming increasingly intense over the last decade.
BPA has been shown to interfere with hormonal balance and can damage brain development, reproductive organs in both fetuses and adults, and the immune system.
Since 2010, some governments, such as Canada and France, have banned the use of BPA for the manufacture of plastic food or beverage containers for children up to three years of age.
Following these interventions, the European Commission adopted Directive 2011/8 / EU establishing the ban on the production of polycarbonate baby bottles containing Bisphenol A starting from 01/03/2011 and the prohibition on importing and marketing from 01/06 / 2011.
EFSA (European Food Safety Authority) will have to express its opinion on Bisphenol A, confirming or distorting the outcome of the toxicological studies carried out in 2006 which set a limit quantity for safe daily exposure in humans, called the tolerable daily dose ( TDI) of 0.05 milligrams for each kilogram of body weight. The tolerable daily dose is the estimate of the amount of a substance, expressed on the basis of body weight, which can be ingested every day for a lifetime without appreciable risk.
EFESA also found that the daily intake of BPA from food was tolerable even for infants and children.
